Registering your address in Sweden

How to register your address in Sweden

If you plan to live in Sweden for an extended period, registering your address is an important administrative step. Address registration is handled by Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, and forms part of the population registry system. If you are staying for one year or longer, you are generally required to notify Skatteverket of your move so that your address is officially recorded. This process can usually be initiated online or by visiting a service office, depending on your situation and residency status.

Once your address is registered, you may become eligible for a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer), provided you meet the relevant criteria. Having a registered address is often necessary for accessing public services, opening a bank account, and completing other formal procedures in Sweden. Because processing times can vary, it is advisable to begin the registration process soon after arrival to avoid delays in related administrative matters.
