Meeting people as a student

Is it easy to meet people in Stockholm as a student?

Meeting people in Stockholm as a student is often closely tied to the university experience itself. Bachelor-level programmes and introductory terms tend to be highly social, with student unions, clubs, events, and gatherings creating many natural opportunities to connect. Swedish universities are no exception; student nations, interest groups, and campus activities often play a central role in helping newcomers build friendships and networks during their first months.

However, the intensity of this social structure can vary depending on your academic stage. Master’s programmes, specialised degrees, and doctoral studies are typically more focused and academically demanding, with fewer organised social activities. In these cases, students may find that interaction within their programme is more limited and less event-driven. For those in more advanced or research-focused tracks, it can therefore be beneficial to seek social opportunities beyond the university framework, through housing communities, hobby groups, professional networks, or other structured environments within the city.
