Moving to Stockholm checklist

Moving to Stockholm checklist

Before relocating to Stockholm, it’s helpful to prepare a few key elements in advance to make your arrival smoother and avoid unnecessary stress.

Housing - The rental market in Stockholm is competitive, and securing accommodation can take longer than expected. Many newcomers arrive without confirmed housing and end up paying for hotels or hostels while continuing their search. If possible, arrange your accommodation before you move to ensure stability from day one.

Credit or Debit Card - Sweden is largely a cashless society. Most shops, restaurants, and services do not accept cash (with grocery stores being a notable exception due to legal requirements). Make sure you have a functioning Visa or MasterCard before arrival. American Express is not accepted everywhere.

Phone Carrier - Having a Swedish phone number can simplify communication with landlords, delivery services, and authorities. Setting up a mobile plan may take a few days, so consider arranging it early. Swedes also commonly rely on SMS and calling directly, rather than WhatsApp or Messenger, which can surprise newcomers.

Public Transport (SL Card) - Stockholm’s public transport network is operated by SL (Stockholms Länstrafik) and includes metro, commuter trains, buses, and trams. While single tickets are available, many residents purchase a monthly pass due to frequent usage. A monthly SL card typically cost around €100, or €60 for students.

Personnummer (Swedish Personal Identity Number) -  If you plan to stay in Sweden for more than a year, you will need to register your address with Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) to receive a personnummer. This identification number is essential for opening a bank account, obtaining a national ID card, and accessing many public services.

Preparing these practical elements ahead of time can significantly reduce friction and help you settle into life in Stockholm more comfortably.
